Course Descriptions
IS 400 Introduction to Body-Mind Integrative Studies:
This course serves as a general introduction and overview of the scope
of Mind-Body Integrative Studies. The student will gain a conceptual
understanding of the interrelationship and interface between mind, body,
and psyche — the building blocks of self. The course provides a unique
perspective through which to view the body-mind, and to effect
deep-reaching and long-lasting change. It encompasses a wide range of
modalities and approaches, all touching equally these building blocks of
self, helping to facilitate healing and higher functioning on all
levels of health.
3 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
IS 401 Mental Constructs and the Body-Mind Relationship:
This course explores the relationship between the brain and the mental
constructs – our cognition, perceptions and interpretations of the world
that comprise what we call reality. Through this course the student
will gain a basic understanding of the interrelationships between brain,
biochemistry, mental/emotional states and physical functioning, as well
as how all of these contribute to our experience of ourselves and the
world we live in. The student will also explore protocols for shifting
these states, and correspondingly shifting our own internal experience,
psychophysical functioning and the ways in which we experience and
interact with the world.3 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
2 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
IS 403 Imagery & Therapeutic Dialog: Imagery is the internal language of the psyche, and has long been used in healing. This course explores the interface and connection between imagery, dialog and physical process. Interactive Guided ImageryTM blends approaches from a variety of fields with an interactive component that allows rapid access to unconscious process, and the means of evoking motivation, insight and access to resources needed to best facilitate healing and change from within.
4 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
IS 405 Working through the Soma: Models of Somatic Exploration: There are many models of somatic exploration, yet all have in common an innate understanding of the relationship between the soma – the body – and our sense of self. Restoring movement, flexibility and awareness to our bodies likewise restores these aspects to our psyche and the ways in which we interact with the world. This course offers a deeper look at the mind-body connections, and various means by which to restore, through the soma, a greater sense of movement and balance to both body and mind.
4 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
IS 406 Communication, Perception and Reality: We constantly create and re-create our sense of reality, whether through interactions with other people, or through our own perception and interpretation of events. This course looks at the ways in which our communication patterns, unspoken cultural constructs, and our own internal tendencies to selective awareness, perception and patterns of denial and interpretation merge to create our on-going experience we call reality.
4 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
IS 500 Introduction to Specialized Kinesiology: Kinesiology is a unique and powerful tool for tapping into the deeper aspects of who we are, and for effecting changes at these levels. This course serves as an introduction to Specialized Kinesiology, offering both an exploration of the underlying philosophy and principles of Specialized Kinesiology, and a working knowledge of basic Kinesiology protocol, techniques and approach. A basic understanding of the body-mind relationship, and state-dependent learning and behavior (behavioral patterning) will be presented, along with an exploration of the use of Kinesiology as a therapeutic tool to foster new learning in the body-mind. The student will learn a variety of techniques, tools and approaches for working therapeutically in this field to effect mind-body healing, neutralize stress, and facilitate a greater degree of mind-body communication and integration.
4 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
IS 501 Omni-Brain: Whole Brain Learning Through Educational Kinesiology(c): Omni-Brain is based on Dr. Paul Dennison’s system of Educational Kinesiology, a model that uses kinesiology as a means of facilitating whole brain learning, and alleviating the stress associated with and contributing to various learning difficulties – dyslexia (inability to read), poor comprehension, retention, organization, difficulty focusing and so on. The student will learn a variety of protocols, skills and exercises designed to facilitate stress-free learning, visual and auditory processing, and a greater degree of mind-body communication. This course also explores the basic tenets of learning theory, and the relationship between brain organization and the ways by which it takes in and processes information.
4 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
IS 503 Specialized Kinesiology III: This course explores somatic metaphor – the language of the deeper psyche. The student will learn to use somatic metaphor as a means of fostering communication with the body-mind, and as a means of eliciting deep-level changes in state-bound patterning. Somatic metaphor gives voice to the psyche, translated through the lens of kinesiology. The student will utilize kinesiology as a tool to model the psyche, and more effectively balance and integrate body and mind, intention and action. The student will learn various applications of Specialized Kinesiology to help access key points along the timeline, defuse past trauma, and connect with future potential.
4 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
IS 510 Kinesiology Practicum: Levels 1, 2, & 3: These courses explore from a hands-on perspective the principles, protocols and approaches presented in Specialized Kinesiology I, II, and III, and Omni-Brain. Each level builds on the preceding one, exploring various approaches of working with the body-mind through kinesiology. The student will apply basic kinesiology protocol to create therapeutic models for working with a wide range of problems and challenges, specifically tailored to client need and therapist expertise.
Variable credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
IS 515 Mind-Body Energetics I: The
course will offer the student an overview of psycho-energetic principles
from a body-mind perspective. This overview will include a basic
understanding of ideo-energetic response and the ways in which it
underlies all of our experience — emotional, behavioral, physiological.
The student will be presented with a basic understanding of the Five
Elements Theory — one of the underlying foundations of Chinese body-mind
philosophy. The student will learn about the psycho-emotional and
behavioral correlations of the Five Elements and how to utilize
knowledge of this theory to effect healing. Further, the course will
offer the student a basic overview of hands-on approaches in working
energetically with the body. The student will study the basic principles
of how to elicit healing states and will be presented with a series of
exercises to the palpation skills and sensitivity needed to work
energetically in a hands-on manner. The student will be taught two basic
models of approach: working with specific points on the body to release
blockage and pain in the body tissues; and methods of unwinding trauma
(body memory) from within the body tissues (fascial release).
3 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
3 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
IS 601 Psycho-Anatomy: Mind-Body Emotional Relationships: This
course explores somatic psycho-emotional correlations – the
interrelationships between our emotions and mind-sets and our physiology
and body postures. The student will gain an experiential understanding
of psycho-anatomical correlations as well as insight into chronic
psvcho-emotional holding patterns, and guidelines for treatment. This
course will also offer an overview of varying maps and models of
pycho-emotional anatomy as a means to better understanding the
interrelationships between mind emotions and body. The student will
study armoring zones (Reichian perspective), and models of body mapping
based on function and correlation.
5 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
5 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
IS 602 Working Through the Unconscious: Mind-Body Healing Through Accessing the Deeper Psyche: Milton
Erickson is widely considered to be a pioneer in the wide-ranging field
of psycho-hypnotherapy, an innovator in working with the deeper psyche
and in effecting mind-body healing. This course offers an overview of
the fundamentals of Ericksonian approach in accessing the deeper psyche.
The student will learn basic approaches to promoting deep-seated
psychological and somatic change through the establishment of effective
healing. states, and will acquire the basic skills needed to access the
deeper unconscious: developing rapport, pacing, eliciting inner
resources, bridging resources to problem states, opening up closed
systems of thought and belief, and reframing and anchoring techniques.
4 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
4 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune
IS 603 The Neurology of Self: The Body-Mind Relationship: This
course presents a basic understanding of the neuro-chemical
relationship between mind and body, including an overview of the
biochemical basis of body-mind states (molecular building blocks of
self), a field known as NeuroPsycho Biology. The student will also gain a
basic understanding of state-dependent learning memory and behavior
(SDLMB) – the influence of state-bound consciousness on behavior,
perception, and healing, and an understanding of the interrelationship
between mental/emotional states and our bio/neurochemistry, as explored
in the field of Psychoneuroimmunology (PIN). The relationship between
Quantum Physics and Healing States (quantum ramifications for the use of
intention and space/time focus in healing) will be looked at as a means
to understanding the ways in which our mental state can influence
physiological health.
4 credits – Dr. Beverly Kune

IS 604 Further Reaches of the Human Mind: The
most subtle levels of communication between mind and body exist on the
cellular level. This course presents an exploration into the means by
which the brain communicates to the cell, and the importance this has
for a deeper understanding of the relationship between mind and body,
health and healing. This course presents a dual perspective – looking at
both the level of bio-electric mediation between brain and cellular
functioning, and an innate level of cellular consciousness and
awareness.
